Welcome to the Journey
Church tech isn’t just about running sound or pointing lights—it’s about creating distraction-free spaces where people can encounter God. That’s the heartbeat behind this blog. My goal is to share what I’ve learned in Audio, Video, and Lighting (AVL) ministry so you and your team can thrive. Whether you’re a seasoned tech director or just stepping into ministry leadership, I want this space to be a resource, an encouragement, and a conversation starter.
Who I Am
I’m Ben, and I’ve been serving in church ministry most of my life. I started out helping with coffee and hospitality, felt called to ministry in 7th grade, and by high school I had found my passion: church production. I was fascinated by the behind-the-scenes work that made worship happen and loved the challenge of creating an atmosphere where people could engage with God without distraction.
That passion led me to study Worship Arts at Grace Christian University and step deeper into the world of AVL. Today, I serve full-time as Production Engineer, leading a volunteer team of 23 across 11 different roles each weekend. Together we minister to more than 1,700 people in person and online every week. Along the way, I’ve seen both successes and challenges that have shaped how I think about church tech.
Why AVL Matters
In today’s digital age, AVL isn’t a luxury—it’s part of how churches communicate the Gospel. Clear audio makes sure the Word is heard. Engaging visuals help the message connect. Thoughtful lighting creates space for worship. When AVL is done well, it fades into the background so the focus stays where it belongs: on God.
But AVL is more than just equipment. It’s about equipping volunteers, stewarding budgets wisely, solving problems creatively, and building systems that serve the mission of the church. That’s where I hope this blog can help.
What You’ll Find Here
This won’t just be theory—it’ll be practical. Over time I’ll share:
Equipment recommendations that balance quality and stewardship
Volunteer training strategies that keep teams engaged and confident
Creative applications of technology to enhance worship without overwhelming it
Lessons learned from both wins and mistakes in ministry
I know every church is different, so take what’s useful and adapt it to your context. My hope is that something here will spark an idea, save you time, or encourage you in a tough season.
Moving Forward Together
I don’t want this to be a one-way conversation. The best part of ministry is learning from each other. So I’d love to hear from you:
What’s one AVL challenge your church is facing right now?
How do you keep your volunteers trained and motivated?
Drop a comment or send me a message—I’d be honored to learn from your journey, too.
Thanks for joining me at the start of this adventure. I’m excited to share more in the weeks ahead as we explore how AVL can strengthen the church’s mission. Together, we can create worship experiences that are meaningful, distraction-free, and centered on Christ.
Stay tuned—next time, I’ll be sharing a simple framework I use for training new AVL volunteers and the importance of simplicity.
